Horace Mann Scholarship for Educators

Amount: One winner will receive $5,000 over four years, 15 recipients will be awarded $1,000 each over two years, and 20 grant winners will each receive one-time $500 awards

Due: May 15, 2004

Who: Public or private K-university instructors planning to enter a two- or four-year college or university.  Applicants must have been employed by a public or private school district for at least two years.

Purpose: enables K-university instructors to continue their education at two- and four-year universities and colleges nationwide. 

Application includes: 300 word essay: “In recent years, standardized test results have become increasingly important.  The relationship between test results and school funding has caused some schools to ‘teach to the test’ in order to improve test scores.  What is your opinion on ‘teaching to the test’?  Why?”; (Essays will be evaluated on creativity, content and mechanics (grammar, spelling, punctuation) ) school and community activities, and letters of recommendation (Secure and hold two letters of recommendation. Only one may be from a fellow teacher or administrator. Neither can be from a relative.  We will notify scholarship semifinalists and ask them to send their letters of recommendation. Please obtain these now; semifinalists will be asked to submit them very quickly.)

Eligibility: Grant seekers must be employed at their educational institution at the time of application, and at the time the scholarship is awarded.  If selected, teachers must begin attending their selected college or university by the following spring; funds will be paid to the school at the beginning of each academic semester.  To remain eligible, each award winner must maintain a “C” average.

Grant for the Enhancement of Geographic Literacy

Who: Individuals or groups in school districts, public institutions, or universities

Purpose: promote geography education in schools, enhance the geographic knowledge of students at the classroom, district, or state levels; encourage integrating geography into social studies curriculum.

Application includes: Cover page (including program title, applicant name, school name, address and phone, and home address and phone), program proposal (Five pages, double spaced (maximum), concise rationale statements, complete program description that highlights the specific geography skills and knowledge that will be introduced or reinforced, number of teachers and students served, specific criteria for and means of evaluating program effectiveness, statement of potential program impact after the first year, specific line-item budget for $2,500 program grant.) program abstract (should contain a clear and concise statement of the program's objective, briefly describe or summarize program activities, and identify the populations served), vita or professional resume of applicant

Reporting: The grant recipient will be expected to participate in a one hour grant writing session at the NCSS Annual Conference in which they will discuss their successful grant writing process and in the year following grant implementation, the grant recipient will be expected to participate in a one hour session at the NCSS Annual Conference, in which they will report on the implementation of their project and offer evidence of its success

Judged on: sound project rationale, specific plans for enhancing geographic literacy, project feasibility, potential for replication, and incorporation of the National Geography Standards as identified in Geography for Life, the "Fundamental Themes in Geography", and appropriate sections of Expectations of Excellence: Curriculum Standards for Social Studies.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowships

Professional Development for female public school teachers

Implement a classroom or school program promoting gender equality with preference to the areas of math, science, and technology; promoting long-term change in the classrooms, schools, and district.

 

Eleanor Roosevelt Fund Award

Amount: The award includes an honorarium of $5,000 plus travel expenses to attend the AAUW National Convention held June 24-27, 2005, in Washington, D.C. The awardee must personally accept the award at the Foundation Night banquet.

Due: November 4, 2004

Who: an individual, project, organization, or institution; while the award focuses on education, the recipient need not be an educator

Purpose: Honors for outstanding contributions to equity and education for women and girls. The award is given for a broad range of activities including classroom teaching, educational and research contributions, and legal and legislative work in equity for women and girls.

Application includes: Complete nominations must include an original, plus seven copies each, of the following:  a nomination form; a 2-4 page narrative; and supplemental materials to support the nominee, such as letters of recommendation/commendation, press clippings, curriculum vitae, and other items supporting the nominee.  To be eligible for the award, projects or activities must take place within the United States and recipients or organizational representatives must reside in the United States at the time the award is given.  AAUW programs are not eligible for this award.

Who: public school teachers in grades K–12, public school education support professionals (para-educators, school bus drivers, maintenance and custodial staff, food services staff, school nurses and student services workers, clerical and office assistants, school security officers, and technicians), or higher education faculty and staff at public colleges and universities.

Purpose: NFIE grants provide opportunities for teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in professional growth. 

Application includes: Applicant Data Sheet, Race/Ethnicity Information, Letter of Support, Narrative including: LEARNING & LEADERSHIP — Narrative Questions:

1.      What do you propose to learn? How, where, and when will that learning be accomplished? Please specify any learning resources you plan to use and the time frame for your work.

2.      What is the need for such professional development? Describe the way you and your colleagues assessed the need, including the student work used in your process. How was this assessment a collegial undertaking? How is this assessment related to your school’s or institution’s improvement plan?

3.      How, when, and where will you share what you have learned? Which of your colleagues will benefit from this sharing and how?

4.      How will this professional development change the method and content of your teaching or your work as an education support professional? How will it change the practice of your colleagues?

5.      How will the proposed work improve student achievement, and how will you know?

6.      Provide a line-item budget for the proposed work. Include any additional support (cash or in-kind) that will be provided by other sources.

NOTE: Proposed activities for Learning & Leadership Grants must be consistent with the recommendations in Teachers Take Charge of Their Learning: Transforming Professional Development for Student Success (especially Chapter Three, “Helping Teachers to Assume Responsibility for Their Own Professional Development") and The ESProfessionals: An Action Guide to Help You in Your Professional Development. Applicants are strongly encouraged to read these reports. The ESProfessionals: An Action Guide to Help You in Your Professional Development is available from the National Education Association, ESP Quality, 1201 Sixteenth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036-3290

Possible activities may include: One-shot” professional growth experiences, such as attending a national conference or engaging a professional speaker, are discouraged. Decisions regarding the content of the professional growth activities must be based upon an assessment of student work undertaken with colleagues and must be integrated into the institutional planning process. Grant funds may be used for fees, travel expenses, books, or other materials that enable applicants to learn subject matter, instructional approaches, and skills. Recipients are expected to exercise professional leadership by sharing their new learning with their colleagues.

Selection Criteria:

  • Proposed learning is high quality (see Teachers Take Charge of Their Learning: Transforming Professional Development for Student Success or The ESProfessionals: An Action Guide to Help You in Your Professional Development)
  • Proposed learning is directly related to a clear and compelling student need
  • Proposed collegial sharing is interactive and sustained over time
  • Proposed learning is likely to improve applicant’s practice and student achievement
  • Budget is appropriate to the proposed learning and sharing
