District Staff, community, and students (self-referrals) make referrals to the program so assistance can be provided for students needing help so they can be successful in school. Approximately 700 students are served through elementary transition centers, drop-out prevention/intervention, alcohol and other drug intervention, HIV/AIDS education, medical referrals, and violence intervention. Referral services to community based agencies are provided to assist the student in directing positive energy into the academic and social environment of the school setting.
-Life Skills Education
The Kansas City, Missouri School District's Life Skills Education Program is supported in part by Abstinence Education Grant Program from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources Administration, Maternal Child Health Bureau, and the Missouri Department of Health contract #B3Z04015. The District provides a comprehensive Life Skills Education Program for students in fourth through eight grades. Approximately 13,000 students participate in this program yearly. The program requires parental permission and encourages parental involvement.

-"Can We Talk" Parenting Classes
This curriculum is offered to parent groups at elementary and middle schools. The curriculum, "Can We Talk?" is a series of parent workshops that provide an opportunity for parents and educators to promote family discussions on prevention of HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy, violence, and making healthy lifetime decisions. This curriculum compliments the Life Skills Program. Approximately 500 parents participate yearly. The six to eight hour workshops are offered at schools and throughout the community.
